Commander Scott's 1901 - 04 expedition
Commander Scott's 1901 base. Because of its proximity to the South Pole this base was used by Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1907 expedition, Captain Scott's 1910 expedition and by members of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition. And in many cases was a life saving refuge. In the background can be seen wooden cases of 'Special Cabin Biscuits supplied by Spratts, Patent Limited Navy Army Expedition Biscuit Manufacturers, London.' You can also see the improvised blubber lamp made from an old tin by members of Shackleton's 1914 expedition. Seal bones stuck in seal blubber in the lantern provided a welcome source of light in the dark interior.
